Irene Mutumba
PEDN was founded by Irene Mutumba, a teacher by profession who later on become a leading social and business entrepreneur among women in Uganda. Irene believes that Uganda's true hopes for economic development lie within an entrepreneurial society that understands opportunities and challenges in its environment; acknowledges and appreciates that each member is useful; where each person takes initiative; each person is proactive and innovative, and aware of their collective responsibility to better themselves and society.
Irene argues that an entrepreneurial society is best approached through the education system, where teaching styles, content and attitude to work should be approached in an entrepreneurial manner. All staff and stakeholder partners have a passion for entrepreneurship and are geared to facilitating change among target beneficiaries - children, youth and communities. Ashoka FellowIrene was elected to the Ashoka Fellowship in 2005. She is challenging the traditional educational system in Uganda by creating a new learning environment where young people are encouraged to think and act like entrepreneurs. Through her youth-led and community supported clubs, Ugandan youth get the opportunities to be creative, demonstrate initiative, and approach learning in new ways.Ashoka is the global association of the world's leading social entrepreneurs - men and women with system changing solutions for the world's most urgent social problems. Since 1981, Ashoka has elected over 2,000 leading social entrepreneurs as Ashoka Fellows, providing them with living stipends, professional support, and access to a global network of peers in more than 60 countries.
