Overview
The Private Education Development Network is a non profit organization formed in June 2004 to promote youth empowerment through establishment of entrepreneurial and business skills programs in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in Uganda. The objective is to integrate entrepreneurial learning and teaching in the formal and non formal educational system and nurture a new generation of young people who will lead Uganda to sustainable development.
Beliefs
PEDN believes that:
- Ugandan youth have potential to lead Uganda to economic self-sufficiency. The public and private sectors are wise to invest in relevant, quality educational opportunities to prepare youth to be job creators in a global economy.
- Entrepreneurship training and experiences that incorporate general success skills, business skills and career guidance are necessary to achieve the desired educational outcomes and economic self-sufficiency.
- Putting young people in charge of their own learning through fun activities, teaches them invaluable communication, leadership, decision making and other life skills.
- To enhance classroom teaching, real life situations have to be integrated in young people's daily lives. Effective and sustained learning is impossible if it is kept separate from family, work, play and community. Therefore, what youngsters are taught must be relevant to their experiences in these different areas.
- To get young people actively engaged in their own learning, there is need to find a dynamic and meaningful "point of contact". These are activities, environments or people that help to build a connection with them and get them interested in learning. Examples include: dance and drama, songs, fun related activities, sports, music and arts, etc.
